Continuity
- Scenes from this special were featured in the teaser of the first episode of Elena of Avalor, which had Elena narrate in a severely hastened form of who she is and what the series is about, since the crossover movie didn't air until later.
- Sofia first became a mermaid in "The Floating Palace".
Notes/trivia
- Disney Press published a book adaptation on October 18, 2016.
- Placement in Sofia the First:
- Chronologically, it is set between "Her Royal Spyness" and "Beauty is the Beast" in season three. Airdate-wise, it aired between "Royal Vacation" and "Hexley Hall" (also from season three), the latter of which is the only episode to mention the changes of the Amulet of Avalor, as well as Princess Elena, herself.
- Placement in Elena of Avalor:
- The flashbacks do set it before season one, but the prologue and epilogue have no chronological placement, simply airing between "The Scepter of Light" and "Navidad" from season one.
- Perhaps as a balance to having Elena's name in the title and having the film begin and end with Elena, the style font and music in the end credits are borrowed from Sofia the First, but this is also mainly because it was made by the Sofia production crew.
- "First Day of Rule" excludes Sofia, as does the Elena of Avalor special "Realm of the Jaquins", when Elena is only mentioned to have saved Avalor.
- Shuriki, having survived the fall, sets up her revenge in "Realm of the Jaquins".
- Admiral Vasquez last appeared in the Sofia the First episode "Baileywhoops", although he was a captain then.
Errors
- When Esteban said that they only dance on special occasions, his goatee was missing.
